Development of a test drug

From idea to effective therapy (3/6)

Story
From Idea to Patient Step II
A team of specialists from various departments develops a drug from the active ingredient (including dosage form, composition, dosage, manufacturing process) and produces small quantities of it

"To develop a drug from a drug candidate, a product strategy team is formed from representatives of many R&D departments as well as the Commercial Development division," explains Martin Broder. He leads such a team for the respiratory therapeutic area and follows products throughout their life cycle. "These specialists develop the product strategy and plan the next steps, taking into account the requirements of the different areas at an early stage."

Some of the key questions to be answered here include:

  • Which affected individuals will benefit from the drug?
  • Which dosage form (tablet, liquid for intravenous or subcutaneous use, etc.) is appropriate for these patients?
  • Which dosage form (tablet, liquid for intravenous or subcutaneous use, etc.) is appropriate for these patients?
  • What must be the composition of the drug that contains the active ingredient?
  • Whether and how the required quantity of the active ingredient can be produced in the highest quality?

Once all the questions are answered, a small amount of a test drug is produced and ready for the next stage in the journey.
